Tensions have escalated in the Persian Gulf after a dangerous clash between the US and Iranian navies erupted. Warships from both countries reportedly came face to face in a sensitive maritime area, where routine surveillance quickly turned into an armed clash.
The US fleet was reportedly providing safe passage for merchant ships, while Iranian patrol boats were warning the US ships to turn back, declaring the area their security perimeter. Initially, harsh messages were exchanged over the radio, but the situation quickly deteriorated and after warning shots were fired from both sides, missiles and defense systems were activated.
According to eyewitnesses, loud explosions were heard at sea, warplanes and drones immediately reached the air, while smoke was seen rising from several warships. Emergency signals were broadcast throughout the area and instructions were issued to ships to keep a safe distance.
Following the alleged incident, governments around the world expressed immediate concern and appealed for restraint. International organizations have called emergency meetings to prevent the situation from worsening, as the Persian Gulf is considered a very important route for global oil shipments.
Global financial markets have also seen severe unrest. Crude oil prices have risen sharply, many shipping companies have changed their ship routes, while investors have started moving towards safe assets.
Defense experts have warned that if such a naval clash intensifies, the entire Middle East could be engulfed in a major crisis. That is why diplomatic sources have been busy trying to reduce tensions between the two countries behind the scenes.
Neither declared war, but both countries have put their naval and air forces on high alert, which has focused the eyes of the whole world on the Persian Gulf.
