The family of U.S. Army Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad, a 28-year-old soldier from Ozone Park, Queens, New York, is mourning an unimaginable loss after she was killed in an Iranian missile attack on a U.S. military airbase in Jordan. While grief has overwhelmed her loved ones, her mother says she remains deeply proud of the courageous daughter who dedicated her life to serving her country.
Sgt. Rampersad was among the American service members targeted during a deadly missile and drone attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base on July 17. Military officials initially listed her as missing following the strike, but after an extensive search, the Pentagon confirmed that she was believed to have been killed in action. Her death marked another painful milestone as the conflict between the United States and Iran continues to intensify.
Speaking after receiving the devastating news, Rampersad’s mother said she felt both overwhelming sadness and immense pride. She described Angel as a determined, compassionate, and fearless young woman who had dreamed of serving in the military from an early age. According to family members, she always placed others before herself and approached every challenge with courage and dedication.
Friends, fellow soldiers, and community leaders have also remembered Sgt. Rampersad as someone whose kindness, leadership, and positive spirit inspired everyone around her. Originally of Trinidadian heritage, she graduated from John Jay College of Criminal Justice before joining the U.S. Army. She later served with the 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment in Germany, where she earned the respect of both her commanders and fellow service members.
Following the attack, President Donald Trump, senior military officials, and the families of the fallen attended a dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base as Sgt. Rampersad’s remains were returned to the United States. The solemn ceremony honored her sacrifice alongside the other soldiers who lost their lives in the same attack.
In New York, local leaders have already begun discussing ways to permanently honor Sgt. Rampersad’s memory. Queens officials have proposed renaming a street near her family home—and possibly a local school—in recognition of her service and ultimate sacrifice. Community members say her legacy of courage and selflessness will continue to inspire future generations.
